Centenarian Captain Tom Moore, who with his fundraising efforts captivated the British public in the early days of the coronavirus pandemic, was admitted to the hospital after testing positive for COVID-19, according to his daughter.

In April, just before his 100th birthday, when he was filmed doing laps with the aid of a walking frame around his garden in the village of Marston Moretaine, north of London, the British World War II veteran caught the public’s imagination.

He was aiming tocollect 1,000 ($1,370) pounds.Instead, for the National Health Service, he raised more than 30 million pounds ($41m), broke two Guinness world records, was knighted by Queen Elizabeth, scored a Number 1 song, wrote an autobiography and helped create a charity.

I wanted to update everybody that today … my father was admitted to hospital, his daughter, Hannah Ingram-Moore, said Sunday on Twitter.

He has been treated for pneumonia over the past few weeks and tested positive for COVID-19 last week. He was with us at home until today, when he need ed additional breathing support. He is being treated in a ward, although he is not in the ICU, she said.

She said in the past few weeks he had been getting “remarkable” medical treatment. She added that the family knew the Bedford Hospital staff would do all they could to make him happy and “hopefully return home as soon as possible.”

Nearly nine million people have been vaccinated against coronavirus in the UK, with one of the highest target categories in the over-80s. But a family spokesperson was stated by Sky News as saying Moore had not obtained a vaccine yet since he was being treated for pneumonia.

Moore, who grew to the rank of captain while representing in India and Myanmar, previously known as Burma, during the Second World War, was knighted in July by Queen Elizabeth II for his fundraising efforts.

An outpouring of assistance was triggered by his hospitalization.

On Twitter, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said his thoughts were with Moore and his relatives.

You’ve inspired the whole nation, and I know we are all wishing you a full recovery, PM Boris Johnson said.

Keir Starmer, the opposition Labor leader, also wished him well, saying : “The whole nation hopes you get well soon @captaintommoore. You’ve been an inspiration to us all throughout this crisis.”
